As a new feature of the ShamansCave website, we now offer a Java IRC client which will let you chat with Cave members live, usually without downloading any software. This connects you to the #ShamansCave channel on the Undernet IRC network with thousands of people on it! This channel has been around on various IRC networks for many years.
However, as with anything computer-related, there are a few things you should be aware of:
- The Java IRC Client will run on any system and browser which has a working Java Plugin. This includes most operating systems, such as Windows and Macintosh systems from the last few years. Most of these have it "out of the box" and require no additional installation. However, some systems, such as Netscape browsers and Windows XP computers, require the Java software to be installed before the IRC Client will work. You can try the main link below - if it works, then you are fine. If not, then follow the instructions here for getting Java installed. It's not possible for all computers, operating systems, and browsers to run Java. For those of you that have significant problems with Java, try this link to install a real IRC client, which should let you get connected: The Main Cave IRC Page With Software InstructionsTo install Java (if you don't have it):
- Go to http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp
- Click on the Download It link
- Click "Yes" and follow the instructions to install it (it should be relatively painless)
- You may need to restart your web browser(s) or computer
- Click on the Enter Chat link below
- The Cave Chat has people from the Cave site who are familiar with the content of it, regulars who just stop by, and total strangers. The people most familiar with the content are "Channel Operators", which in the Java IRC Client. You can recognize them by the @ to the left of their nicknames in the channel members list on the right. They should be able to answer most of your questions regarding ShamansCave. Although we try to control (and remove) obnoxious, rude, or annoying individuals, it's not always possible to watch the channel all the time, so please keep that in mind. Most of the time, it is a very pleasant environment and nothing to worry about.
- The channel is often quiet. Sometimes, we are all not watching the screen, although the clients are present (to keep an eye on things). Please be patient when you join - it may take a few minutes or longer to notice. If nobody appears to be talking for an extended time, feel free to try again later. Real life has been known to intervene!
- Change your "Nick Name" once you're connected to the channel to something unique (where it says "CaveChat")by typing /nick (whatever nickname you want)and hitting enter. Be aware that if that nickname is already in use on undernet you'll need to choose a different one. Popular nicknames are often being used, so you can add a number or character to your nick.
- You can disconnect the session by simply closing the browser window when you're done. Or by clicking the disconnect button on the top left of the chat window.
- Further information on the Cave Chat can be found on the main IRC Chat page on the site: Cave Chat FAQ When the java chat starts you will be asked to allow the security certificate to run, please click the yes, or run button. In some versions of Java it might indicate it is an invalid certificate, but in any case it is safe to accept it, no one is going to blow up your computer.
